Staten Islanders came ready with questions on July 17, 2023, for Mayor Eric Adams’ town hall event at Curtis High School, located in the St. George section of Staten Island. This was part of the mayor’s five-borough “Talk with Eric” series.
Mendy Mirocznik, president of the Staten Island Council of Jewish Organizations (COJO), and Ari Weiss, COJO Security Chairman and Coordinator Staten Island Shomrim, represented COJO at the town hall.
“We at COJO are grateful and appreciate that Mayor Adams took time from his grueling schedule to hold a Staten Island Town Hall. What was further impressive was that many of the mayor’s commissioners and senior advisors joined him and were on hand to further respond and take note of the issues that arose at the town hall. It truly was democracy in action.” So remarked Mendy Mirocznik, President, COJO.
Mirocznik explained, “one of the greatest challenges that we as a society face is a lack of communication. People simply do not communicate and way to often on the rare occasion when people do communicate there is a lack of civilly and people are rude to one another. The mayor stressed one important word “respect.” He emphasized the need for people to maintain civil discord and to interact at all times in a respectful manner. The mayor stressed that this is so important especially when we disagree, we must do so with respect and sensitivity.
Mirocznik quipped, “I fully concur with the mayor’s approach on respect and civility. It is through the mayor’s revival of the lost attribute of respect and open honest communication that the city is revitalized and will continue to flourish. The lesson gleaned tonight is how the mayor in a hands-on approach demonstrated that he practices what he preaches and placed the needs of the people first. The mayor made it clear that their concerns are important to him as mayor. The mayor demonstrated this lesson in a respectful manner and it truly was apparent that this is the hallmark of his mayoralty and what is expected from his commissioners, senior advisors, members of his administration and from all city employees.
Leaving the town hall, we felt that the mayor has successfully found a solution in getting government to work for the people of the city. The folks in attendance felt that they are part of identifying issues and finding solution to the issues they face. This partnership between government and the people is what public service is all about and is so special and unique to Mayor Adams and his administration. Thank you Mayor Adams for taking the lead in making the common persons voice heard, you truly are true to your word.. This perhaps is the greatest secrete to your success as the mayor that you practice what you preach and this is having respect for all at all times.”
